The Haier P5 Mobile Phone. The worlds first ever pen phone; the original trend setter. |
|
Discontinued The Haier P5, launched in 2004 was the worlds first ever pen style mobile phone. In a time where the 'soap bar' format for mobile phones were the norm, the P5 broke the mould for conventional handset design. Featuring a monochrome screen with ice blue backlight the P5 made up for what it lacked in features with its exceptional design. The most popular version, shown in silver was accented in with a high gloss black screen surround; a design feature that only today is beginning to take off. For the first time, black really is the new black! Not only that, but its angled buttons allowed for easy texting as well as number dialling on the vertical screen. One major feature of the P5 was the advertised laser pointer. Unfortunately the class three device was deemed a little too strong for the European markets and European Union Standards Regulations meant that any P5 sold in Europe had to have the laser feature deactivated in the firmware. Today, P5 models with a working laser (original imports) are very rare and still can command their original retail price of up to GBP150.000, even for second hand models in good working condition. While the P5 ended production with its successor (the Haier P6) being released, there are still many handsets being used in the global market and still is, to this day the best selling pen style mobile phone. A true design classic that even today has resisted ageing unlike so many of its similar aged handsets from other manufacturers. |
